Our Story

Catherine and Amalie worked together as family lawyers for 5 years in one of Queensland’s leading law firms. In 2018, following two years of embarking on their separate career paths, the duo joined forces again to create Cairns Family Law Group. Their vision was to bring a fresh approach to family and divorce law in the Cairns  and North Queensland region and provide an affordable holistic service of connecting their clients with the right professionals to assist them through their separation.

At Cairns Family Law Group we aim to empower you by providing you with information about your legal options and be part of your team to help you get through your separation.

Catherine Ross

Catherine Ross is a Director at Cairns Family Law Group. Catherine has been a family lawyer for over 19 years. She became an Accredited Specialist in 2009 meaning she has successfully completed an advance, peer review assessment and has been recognised as having achieved a standard of excellence in family law.

Catherine prides herself in being empathetic whilst providing clients with practical solutions to their legal problems. She is known for her client focused, common sense approach to achieving excellent results for her clients. Catherine is experienced in all aspects of family law and divorce law – it’s all we do.

Catherine has worked on a number of property issues from the simple to the complex, involving companies, trusts, partnerships, self managed superannuation. She is commercially savvy and gets that your business is your ‘baby”. She is equally experienced in parenting matters helping clients navigate co-parenting after separation, whatever that means for your family and gets that no two families are the same.

In recent years, Catherine has been consistently ranked as a leading family lawyer in the North Queensland region in the prestigious Doyles Guide.

Amalie Grima

Amalie is a Director at Cairns Family Law Group. Amalie has over 10 years of experience working solely in family law. Amalie commenced her law career in Cairns, before relocating to Brisbane. In Brisbane, Amalie practiced family law in one of the city’s largest and most reputable family law firms. Amalie returned to Cairns bringing with her a wealth of experience especially in relation to complex property and parenting matters.

Amalie is a North Queensland local. She was brought up in a family of small business owners. She has the lay of the land in our region and insight for the need for practical and cost effective resolutions for her clients and their families.

Amalie has devoted her career to divorce and family law. Her focus is to obtain practical and commercial outcomes for her clients by resolving issues without going to the Court. Amalie understands that not all matters can be resolved through negotiation and mediation. When required, Amalie provides strong and strategic representation for her client’s in Court. She has extensive experience in appearing before the family law courts having appeared before various judges across Queensland.

Amalie was ranked as a leading family law, parenting and children’s lawyer for 2019 in the prestigious Doyle’s Guide.

In 2019, Amalie was appointed by her peers as a Committee Member for the Family Law Practitioners Association which is the leading professional body for family lawyers in Queensland.

Tamlyn Leahy

Tamlyn is an Associate at Cairns Family Law Group. Tamlyn has nearly 20 years’ experience in law and she has practised solely in family law for 7 years.
Tamlyn grew up in the Northern Territory and has practised law in both the Northern Territory and Queensland. Tamlyn’s wealth of legal knowledge and experience, communication skills and life experiences assist her in providing measured and sound advice to her clients.
Tamlyn deals with all aspects of family law and has extensive experience appearing in Court, including family law courts and domestic and family violence courts.
Tamlyn’s focus is on obtaining timely, cost efficient and equitable outcomes for her clients.


Chelsea is a lawyer at Cairns Family Law Group. Chelsea is admitted as a lawyer in both the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia.

Chelsea is a Cairns local, having completed her degree at James Cook University in 2019. During her final year of study, Chelsea was the recipient of the Susan Thomson Memorial Award in Family Law for the achieving the highest academic results in the subject of Family Law.

Chelsea has solely devoted her career to working in family law. She has experience in parenting disputes and agreements, property settlements, domestic and family violence matters, and separation and divorce. She is passionate about providing clients with practical and cost-effective outcomes in their family law matter.

Chelsea works closely with our Directors, Amalie Grima and Catherine Ross.

Amanda Turner

Amanda is a paralegal on our team. She has worked in family law over ten years. Amanda is often the first contact that a client will make with our team when enquiring about their family law matter. Amanda understands the personal and often emotional nature of family law.
